I think it would be a good idea to have a betta profile section. We could work together to create comprehensive profiles on all of the betta species, even the wild ones. Just something to help those old and new alike.

Why? That's what IBC SMP is for. The information is already available publicly.

Fair enough... just thought it might be another bonus to being a BBC member  http://209.85.62.26/html/emoticons/tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' />

Then we can have members comment on their experiences with them. SMP is helpfull, but I like hearing from others first hand experiences.

Yeah, like, for example, why is the male I bought from you never "dropy"? It can't be a trait of pastels, is it?
(It is a pastel, isn't it?)

I can actually see both sides of this argument. Then again it might be a lot of work for Zena!

If we do deside to do this its going to be low on the priorities and will take a long time to complete.

I agree, we have more important things to deal with first

If we're setting one up, I won't be the only one doing it.

It will be whoever that has experience with the species...

Instead of a forum thing, we can do it as part of the future newsletter, kinda like a column.

Also if we have a webbie it can go one there. For the time being we could have a freewebs one...

I don't think we should duplicate the info that is already available, just profile some of the fish that are not "on the main road". Laura can do the bit about CTPK, for example http://209.85.62.26/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />
I was wondering for a while, while full tails have been classified into many types, CTs - not so much. And it's obvious that they come from various tail shapes. More attention is paid to the type of branching than anything else. (For example, why a CT with a tail on the short side, indicating some PK ancestry doesn't keep its tail fully spread, as a PK would?)

To cut it short - I think we should limit such a section to the types that we (each) own - just like the Gallery section, but not necessarily with pictures - on a I-need-to-share-this-about-my-fish basis.

On the forum there are already a number of posts in various sections containing information that i, for one, would like to revisit in the future.

I thought we were talking about profiling betta species, not strains?

Anyhow, if anyone want to write up betta profiles, go ahead and start a new thread in the Gallery section, and post your article as the first post. I'll then review them and pin the thread. Name your thread "Profile: xxx", where xxx = B.pugnax, B.Channoide, B.Splendens halfmoon, B.Splendens crowntail etc (hope you get my idea). Make sure that you reference your article properly.

That's simple enough to do, and is all that can be done for now.

The type of articles that in my opinion would most useful (let's hear it if you think otherwise) will have the following structure:

The article should talk about identification characteristics, behaviour, habitat and diet requirements, maybe perhaps some history, geographic distribution etc. The article should be objective and give an overview about the species/strain in a general sense. Focus on facts, refrain from "my fish" comments, although tank parameters and food choices for captivity would be good information to share.

Yeah I agree with Zena's original post.  Why bother duplicating all the info that is in the IBC SMP pages.  They are well-written and quite helpful.  If we do something like this it would be best to make it as a "based on my experiences with these fish..." rather than just a page rehashing the IBC's well-organized site.

I would benefit (actually, am already) by reading first hand experience. For species or strains http://209.85.62.26/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> (I'm more confused on strains, which can mean I haven't read enough about the species http://209.85.62.26/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> )
