Hello All,

I've never come across this (throughout our whole ONE spawning Wink ) but I wondered if this was an issue.

Our eggs from our latest spawn hatched overnight, and daddy's nest is now covering the entire half-plate that is suspended there, and there are tonnes of little teeny tiny tails sticking out from under the nest.... but there are also lots of little eyes looking at me from what looks like on top of the nest?Huh
They're almost sitting right at the top of the bubbles, I can see them all the way along the nest in the space between the water line and the top of the plate.

Is this normal?? Are those ones doomed to become crispy from lack of water?? Will they just know how to get down from there?? There are lots of tails under the nest, so it's not like the whole spawn will be unsuccessful if they are in a bad situation.

Let me know what you think, or if I'm just being paranoid Tongue

I have certainly noticed babies sticking up from the nest.  Never noticed huge die-offs when that occurs but then again I tend to have small spawns anyways.

Yeah, I've seen that.  I don't think it's a problem.  Daddy should be keeping them from drying out too much.  Sounds like he had a HUGE spawn!!! Grin

Yes Grandma, you are being paranoid lol!  I would KILL for a spawn so thick that some of them are suspended in the bubbles!  My dear, you have what we call in the betta biz as a BUMPER CROP!!!  The Betta Gods are smiling on you!  Enjoy it and cross your fingies

Well, Ian took daddy out of the nest on Saturday morning before he went to work (I was shopping like mad in the states so he was on "fish duty"). He said he REALLY didn't want to leave, but coaxed him out with some Atisons and got him out safely.

I took out the floating plate yesterday and I could see about 5 babies stuck to the top that didn't make it-- but there are TONS of living ones, I'd say at least 75-100. They're hanging out in little groups here and there so it's really hard to tell!

I'm hoping that more make it from this spawn than our last one, although "Bobby" is still alive and well and enjoying his MW by the looks of it. I'm always checking on him (if it is a "him") and he likes to trick me and hide in the mossball so I think he's dead, but he always comes out eventually.

The new spawn will be one week old as of tomorrow morning, so we're over the fist hurdle for sure Smiley.
I'll keep you posted when we get a better count

Well I've counted only 10 deaths in the past week (that's obviously only the ones at the bottom of the tank that I can see though- I guess there's always issues of cannabalism etc.). So we're not doing as bad as the last spawning.

They're all still in little groups scattered throughout the tank and there are quite a few hanging out on the mossball, so it's still hard to estimate the number-- I'm thinking around 50-75 now. Not bad!

Bobby is still growing at a quick rate and I can actually see some tail finnage other than the little tadpole stick! Very exciting Smiley

Until the next update,

Well we seem to have had a bit of bad luck. With the lovely snow storm that blew through Toronto our area was without power most of the night and some of this morning. Ian stayed home as it was rather chilly in our apartment and with not knowing when it was coming on he was with the dog ready to go to my parents house if it got too cold- but not that easy to do with 28 fishies plus a grow out tank :p . It unfortunately meant that our tanks had no heat for quite a while. The power came back on just after 8:00, but Ian says he can't see any babies swimming in the tank. We're hoping that they are maybe hiding in the moss ball as it would maybe retain some heat, but we're not sure at this point. The other fish are okay so far.

Bad situation but we will try again Sad

We're at Midland and Eglinton. Half of the street was out and the other half (ONE house away from us!) still had power.

I found one fry last night, so we'll see what the next few days brings- hopefully a few more that hid in the moss ball.
